Privacy Policy
Effective September 1, 2026
Aside ("Aside," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information Aside collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. By using Aside, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Information We Collect
Aside is designed to keep your journal on your device. We do not require an account, and we do not operate a server-side database that stores your journal entries.
Information you provide: journal entries (text and audio), photos you attach, tags, and any other content you create within the app. This content is stored locally on your device.
Information collected automatically: Aside does not use analytics, advertising identifiers, or tracking technologies. We do not collect device identifiers, location data, or usage statistics.
How Your Information Is Used
Reflections. If you enable Reflections, the text of your journal entries for a given day or week is sent, through a secure proxy we operate, to Anthropic to generate a short written reflection. Only entry text is sent — never photos, tags, or any information that could identify you, since Aside has no account system. You can disable Reflections at any time in Settings, which stops this immediately. Entry content sent for this purpose is not stored by us after the reflection is generated.
Transcription. Voice entries are transcribed using Apple's Speech framework. On supported devices and languages, transcription happens entirely on-device. On older devices or less common languages, Apple may process the audio on Apple's own servers, governed by Apple's privacy practices.
Subscriptions. If you subscribe to Aside Plus, purchases are processed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. Aside does not receive or store your payment information.
Support requests. If you contact us through the Support page, the email address and message you provide are transmitted to our support inbox via Formspree, a third-party form processor, solely to respond to your request.
Data Storage and Security
Your journal entries, photos, and tags are stored locally on your device. We do not maintain a server-side database of your journal content. Reflection requests are relayed through infrastructure we operate on Cloudflare, which verifies that requests come from a genuine, unmodified copy of Aside but does not log or retain your entry content.
Data Sharing
We do not sell your information. We do not share your information with third parties except as described above: Anthropic, for generating reflections you've chosen to enable; Apple, for transcription and subscription processing; and Formspree, only if you contact support.
Your Choices
You can turn Reflections off at any time in Settings. You can delete any entry, and its attached photos, from within the app at any time. You can export your entire journal (Settings → Data → Export Journal) as a file containing your entries and photos. Because Aside has no account system, there is no account to delete — removing the app from your device removes all locally stored data.
Children's Privacy
Aside is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated effective date at the top of this page.
